Manage consolidation perimeters

Hi,
I would like to know what are the best practices for managing consolidation perimeters when the perimeter is not flat.
I would also like to know if a company or subgroup leaves the perimeter, how is this structure maintained, can the old members be removed from the perimeter or should they remain forever?
