Announcing a New Planning Foundation: Line Item Modeling

Overview

OneStream delivers a purpose-built driver-based planning solution that empowers organizations to plan at the most granular level directly within the OneStream platform. The March 2026 release of Line Item Modeling provides an innovative technology foundation for three Planning solutions with more on the way!

Line Item Modeling enables operational leaders to model workforce, projects, and contract plans with agility, security, and full business ownership. With no-code configuration, dynamic registers, and integrated financial alignment, Line Item Modeling combines the flexibility of spreadsheets with the governance and performance of an enterprise-grade solution.

The following planning solutions are available with the March 2026 Line Item Modeling release:

• Workforce Planning: Position-based modeling with start/end dates, compensation logic, and transfer management.
  
  
• Fixed Term Planning: Ideal for leases, subscriptions, and projects with defined dates, leveraging the engine’s ability to consume start and end dates.
  
  
• Duration Based Planning: Supports use cases like contracts and grants with flexible period-based calculation that is date agnostic.

Can I transition my People (PLP) or Thing Planning (TLP) solution to Line Item Modeling (LIM)?

Yes, we encourage all customers to learn about the benefits and ease of configuring LIM, and plan the best time to transition their People or Thing Planning solution to LIM.

Is the new Line Item Modeling solution available for my users in a browser?

Line Item Modeling is developed with a browser first approach and works natively in both the browser and the OneStream client. The full solution can be deployed and used entirely in the browser.

Is there a migration or do I need to start over?

There is no automated migration – you will want to take advantage of the new capabilities in LIM that simplify configuration and administration to implement your solution.

What else is available to jumpstart my implementation of Workforce Planning in Line Item Modeling?

There is a new accelerator now available on Solution Exchange called Workforce Planning Express which comes with prebuilt accounts, formulas, and drivers. You may use as little or as much of this as you would like in your OneStream Application to get started with your Workforce Planning implementation. 

Have customers transitioned from People Planning to LIM Workforce Planning already?

Yes, with great success. Customers in our Limited Availability program and early GA adopters are pleased with the ease of transition, the reduction in customizations, and the overall performance improvements!

Are there tips or instructional guidance to assist with the transition?

Yes, stay tuned for more content, tips and tricks for transitioning existing planning solutions to LIM. In the meantime, check out all the great content on Navigator including the Quick Links referenced above in this page.

How soon do I need to act?

We will be supporting existing People and Thing Planning Solutions through December 2027. Critical issues only will be monitored prior to that date. We encourage you to plan for your Version 9+ upgrade as soon as possible to be ready for your LIM conversion. 

Is OneStream permitting new People and Thing Planning Solutions?

No, we are encouraging all new Workforce, Duration, and Fixed Term planning solutions to be implemented with LIM. We have removed People and Thing Planning solutions from Solution Exchange as of February, 2026.

Can I upgrade my platform version while still using the legacy PLP and TLP solutions?

All currently supported Platform versions are compatible with the legacy PLP and TLP solutions. Although future platform releases me be limited to LIM, we will continue to offer supported Platform versions for PLP and TLP until December, 2027. 

When will LIM be available?

LIM is generally available from March 2026

Is there a license fee for LIM?

No, LIM is available for deployment to all licensed users in your current OneStream application. 

Are OneStream Partners enabled to assist with Design and Implementation?

Yes, partners have participated in early access programs in the solution and are prepared to help you implement Line Item Modeling solutions.

Does LIM integrate into my Financial Plan?

Yes, LIM operates on the OneStream platform as with all OneStream solutions.

What Planning Solutions are coming next within the LIM foundation?

We are currently evaluating Capital planning and other purpose-built Planning models for inclusion on the LIM foundation. The LIM models are flexible enough to also build your own Planning solutions using the setup and administration capability of LIM.

Do all Solutions come together with a single LIM foundation?

Yes – all Planning Solutions created with the LIM foundation share common components and configuration tools. These solutions also use the Line Item Modeling architecture and calculation engine.

How will Planning Solution updates be distributed?

All future updates within the LIM foundation will be distributed through a single, foundational LIM update on the Solution Exchange, which includes instance management and upgrade capability in the foundation.
